In the centre of the high altar is a large crucifix which is a representation of Jesus' body and emphasis his sacrifice - his death by crucifixion.
This images shows the east window above the high altar, reflected in one of the candle sticks that are present on top the altar.
The candles are a symbol that represents the light of God, or specifically, the light of Christ.

This image is taken from the West Tower Gallery, looking down the nave and through the archway of the wooden rood screen that is the demarcation point between the nave and the chancel.
The colours of the altar cloths are chosen specifically to correspond to the time of year. During Easter, for example, the colour is white or gold. Purple is used during Lent and Advent. This image shows the side profile of the great crucifix on top of the high altar.
