As an avid reader of the Times Newspaper I was struck by
Peter Brookes’ cartoon of 16th January 2010. It showed three
cartoons depicting Haiti's earthquake.
-
The first showing the poverty of Haiti re-quake,
-
The second total destruction post-quake
-
The third showing exactly same cartoon as the first
cartoon entitled ‘Haiti’s reconstruction.’
In other words without care and support Haiti is still going
to be one of the poorest nations on earth even after all the
effort to support it after the earthquake..
As a Church we have started an appeal for Haiti as many
churches will be doing and people will be generous, but
after a few weeks the world moves, even some of the generous
benefactors will move, and governments will move on. After
such a violent and terrible earthquake I believe that as a
world we need to support Haiti which lives next to the
wealthiest nation the world has ever known.
Suffering from its past history of slavery, and past history
of colonialism and corrupt governments it now has an equally
inefficient and incapable government trying to deal with
such a major problem. My fear is that there will be civil
unrest in the country unless all the nations of the world
act in unison and act quickly.
The re-construction of Haiti must be a priority for the
whole world, and my hope and prayer is that charities
instead of trying to score points by who is there first and
who gets themselves on the TV will actually work together
without need for publicity.
Also, a wonderful start would be that every banker in the
city of London gave 5% of their 2009 bonus to the fund and
that every church donated one offertory collection, and that
after a time of great indulgence that every family in
Britain gave up one Sunday meal and sent the money to the
Disaster Emergency Committee.
Please prayer for the people Haiti – God knows that they
need it.
