Will You or Won't You? My Will and Me |
I have had an interesting week! Life at the Rectory is
certainly not boring.
Please note, I am a morning person, my wife is not. I am
definitely not an evening person and wife can stay up late
finishing what ever project she is involved in. After 34
years of marriage we have come to come to terms with it all.
It is a marvellous form of family planning!
Recently an early morning conversation began with my wife
saying, ‘I have been going through our private documents and
we really must renew our Will it very out of date’. There
was no, ‘Good morning darling’, or ‘How are you dear?’
However, when I looked at our Will she was right. It is very
out of date.
Our last Will was written when my two sons were very small
and we arranged for guardians for them in case anything
happened to us, and now they have ‘flown the nest’ the Will
was very much out of date.
Therefore we arranged to see our local solicitor who was
very friendly, (he is a member of our congregation) and
within 15 minutes we had revised our Will and it has now
been duly signed, and I have given copies to my two sons who
are Executors.
Why make all this fuss, we are not the Rothschild’s?
Having been a clergyman for 36 years I have seen so much
aggravation caused by the lack of a Will and squabbling
within families. The height of which was sitting in the
front of funeral car after a funeral service, with the
family in the back of the car arguing about items within
their mother’s home. It was very sad.
If you want to make sure that your property goes to who you
want it to, or you want to decide what sort of funeral you
want, it is vital to make a Will.
Also you may like to make a bequest to a charity.
Recently Fakenham Parish Church received a bequest from a
gentleman in Australia who had contacts with Fakenham. The
money was used to renew the Church’s great west window which
will allow the coming generations to appreciate this
wonderful window. Last week I heard that the Church had been
left £1,000 from a lady who had poor hearing and so it has
been decided to use the money to start a fund to renew the
sound system at Church.
Churches and charities rely on bequests. Our policy is to
use bequests to help towards the restoration of the Church.
So my professional advice is use a reputable solicitor, and
makes your Will, and then get on and enjoy the rest of your
life.
