Where Is the Truth, What is Truth? |
It is very difficult to define
what the truth in any situation is. This week we have seen
the ongoing inquest into the Iraqi War and those leading the
enquiry trying to find out what actually happened. As we
know from the bombing of Dresden, the Charge of the Light
Brigade or even dare I say in Norfolk, the Battle of
Trafalgar - it is always difficult to find the historical
truth as to what actually happened in an historical event.
If anything happens in this
country at the moment there is always a demand for a
judicial enquiry by politicians, and my belief is that often
this is a smoke screen to avoid admitting any blame. The
expenses scandal enquiry has shown that really no one party
was blameless, and when the dust settled, low and behold we
learn about a pay increase for politicians whilst most of
society is suffering financially. Am I cynic?
Now I am not going to encourage
anyone to be the ‘Witch Finder General’, or to look
for evil and the devil in every area of life, but as a
church and community as we draw close to a General Election,
it is our duty to try and search out truth and ask those
questions to political leaders which are important.
And so we are planning a public
meeting on April 29th to discuss the General Election and to
invite all the candidates to Fakenham Methodist Church to a
‘Question Time’ to find out what they do believe. Christians
need to ask questions about morality, about compassion, and
our caring for the environment. We need to know whether
candidates will support family life, and to help those in
need. We need to know whether they intend to root out
corruption from the Palace of Westminster and lead the
nation away from these practices.
We will probably hear what the
candidates want us to hear, but at all times as Christians,
we should lead by example and act in the ways of love and
joy and peace, but also of truth and justice. Our teaching
and preaching, the way we lead our lives, should be with
trust in God and the encouragement of truth and justice.
